THE GREAT LIFE DIET

With the majority of Americans now attempting to eat healthier and an estimated million of them each year in the past decade adopting vegetarian or semi-vegetarian diets, The Great Life Diet is ready to enter the cultural mainstream.

In seven steps, The Great Life Diet offers a balanced and orderly approach to an active, fulfilling daily life. The aim always is to strengthen health, however good or ill. Indeed, thousands of people, their ailments ranging widely from the common cold to chronic fatigue to heart disease and even to "incurable" cancers, have been helped, often dramatically, by espousing the dietary and lifestyle practices described in Waxman's instructive guide.

With sound sense and flexible principles, this diet extends to its readers a means both to better their health and to significantly enhance the joy in their daily lives.

Available online at www.amazon.com and will be in bookstores soon.

EDITORIAL REVIEWS
-- Kirkus

Waxman, founder of the Strengthening Health Institute in Philadelphia is an able guide to a macrobiotic diet and lifestyle. First popular in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s, macrobiotics will no doubt resonate today with a population increasingly plagued by obesity, heart disease and environmental problems. The Great Life Diet provides a detailed explanation of the history, the principles and the reasoning behind the diet, but just as importantly, how to integrate it into your life-by first adding whole grains and vegetables, and gradually working up to eliminating not only refined flour and sugar, but also meat and dairy products. Waxman, a patient and down-to-earth teacher who has been practicing macrobiotics for more than 35 years, walks the reader through the seven steps of the diet. The emphasis rests on overall physical and spiritual health, and Waxman claims that following the macrobiotic diet can result in increased energy, improved skin and sexual well-being and a lower risk of cancer and other diseases. The author, a self- confessed former junk-food addict, makes an inspiring guru-wise, encouraging and transcendent, but also accessible. A refreshing book that focuses on overall health, rather than just weight loss.

-- Publishers Weekly
This breezy beginner's guide to healthy, conscientious living from health and nutrition expert Waxman (Ten Steps to Strengthening Health) offers a number of attitudes and techniques for improving health, most notably a diet high in grains and other macrobiotics. Despite nearly 40 years of clean living, the former junk food addict is still able to connect in a direct manner with those just starting on the road to health. More a philosophy than a regimen, Waxman's seven steps encourage devotees to become more self-probing and self-aware. His rules include thinking about the contents of daily meals, eating two or three balanced meals every day centered around grains, and to eat slowly, chewing well. While much of his advice is practical (some might call it common sense), unusual (but harmless) tactics stretch credulity (a daily 10-15 minute rub-down with a warm, wet cotton cloth promises "beautiful, new and younger looking skin"). Other rules include never reheating leftover vegetables, wearing only cotton clothing and a rather complicated system for figuring out which cooked foods can be mixed together on a plate. Few recipes are provided, so those looking for a variety of macrobiotic dishes will be better served elsewhere. Open-minded readers may find the book revelatory, but skeptics may also be swayed by Waxman's disarming charm.

Denny Waxman's practice and teaching on macrobiotics carry in them the essence of Buddhist teachings on interbeing, happiness and compassion. Through his message and conviction that personal health is the basis for planetary health, I see in him a truly engaged Buddhist.

Macrobiotics expert and health counselor Waxman (Ten Steps to Strengthening Health; The Great Life Handbook) presents a cogent seven-step guide to the dietary, lifestyle, and spiritual aspects of the macrobiotic philosophy. Waxman's straightforward and concise explanation of the basic tenets of macrobiotics is well suited to newcomers to this Eastern-influenced approach to strengthening physical and mental health.

He emphasizes the value of having calm, seated meals at the same time each day and explains the dietary importance of eating grains and vegetables at each meal. Waxman also clearly addresses the lifestyle aspects of macrobiotics, which include proper forms of exercise, creating a more natural home environment, and cultivating what he calls a "spirit of health." This work is likely to appeal to open-minded readers interested in whole foods and natural living.

REFLECTIONS ON A MEAL - DENNY WAXMAN

I grew up in Northeast Philadelphia in the 50’s and 60’s. It was an ordinary neighborhood. There were always plenty of kids out on the street to play with. We knew most of our neighbors. I felt secure in my life and confident that my family and friends would always be there.... read the article (pdf)
